Netts chase league and cup double

Newly crowned Senior Winter League champions DataTech Netts remain firmly on course to achieving the league and Knockout Cup double.

Saturday saw Netts beat Robin Hood at Bernard Park to reach the semi final of the season ending single elimination tournament which was suspended due to inclement weather.

They will face Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds in the remaining semi final when the tournament resumes today with the eventual winner to lock horns with Signworx Netts in the final.

Signworx Netts reached the final after getting past Blazzin Bluebirds and North Village Lady Rams.

Last month saw DataTech Netts clinch a second league championship in three years with a game to spare after handing defending league champs Lady Bluebirds a 38-30 loss.

“It feels great to be champions again,” said Netts co-captain Marissa Brangman. “We attribute our success to our experience, hard work and cohesiveness.”

Remarkably, DataTech Netts completed the league campaign undefeated.

“I wouldn’t say it (unbeaten record) came as a surprise, but we definitely had to earn our unbeaten record,” added Brangman. “We came up against some formidable competition this season, especially with Lady Bluebirds being last year’s champions.”

Brangman and her teammates will now look to cap a fine season by adding the Knockout Cup to their league title.

“The knockout cup would be a bonus,” Brangman said. “However we know that it will not be handed to us.”

Netts will again rely heavily upon prolific goal shooter and co-captain Gina Benjamin who led all First Division scorers during the league campaign with 193 goals - despite missing three games.

“Gina is one of the best shooters in Bermuda,” said Netts assistant coach Tanika White. “She is left handed and very rarely misses.”

Last year’s league champs Lady Bluebirds finished as runners up to Netts followed by SS Tigers who rounded off the top three.

Relegated to the Second Division was Warwick Panthers.

Robin Hood capped a superb inaugural season in the Senior Winter League ranks by clinching the Second Division championship and with it promotion to the top tier next season.
