King and Smith win silver medals

Long jumper Arantxa King and heptathlete Shianne Smith both claimed silver medals at the CAC Senior Championships in Morelia, Mexico at the weekend.King, 23, placed second in her event with a season-best leap of 6.45 metres in her final jump, while 27-year-old Smith set a new national record with 5222 points to win silver. The Montpellier-based athlete also broke the Bermuda record in the 100 metres hurdles. In the triple jump Jasmin Brunson finished fifth with a leap of 12.26 metres; Tre Houston came 22nd overall in the men’s 100 metres with a time of 10.58 seconds; Tamika Williams placed sixth in the women’s 1,500 metres (5:04.14), and King came 13th overall in the women’s 100 metres (11.89).It was a competition to forget for Ashley Berry who failed to finish the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase after a mix up by the Championship organisers.Berry’s preparations were thrown into chaos when the organisers brought her event forward by 30 minutes without informing the Bermuda athlete. It’s understood the time change was announced in Spanish, leaving Berry without sufficient time to complete her warm-up.
