Road accident rules Benjamin out of Championships

Bermuda vice-captain Diara Benjamin has been ruled out of this month’s World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, Scotland through injury.Benjamin was originally named in the Island’s 14 member squad for the upcoming tournament to take place at the Commonwealth Arena August 22-31.But the versatile player was omitted after breaking a leg in a road traffic accident.Bermuda will also be without the services of dynamic midcourt player Dominique Richardson who has been ruled out through school commitments.This year marks Bermuda’s first appearance at the World Youth Netball Championships — involving players at the Under-21 level — in nearly a decade.Bermuda have been placed in Group B which also consists of regional rivals Trinidad and Tobago, New Zealand, Northern Ireland and Malta.Bermuda’s netballers gained valuable practice for this month’s World Youth Netball Championships during the England All-Saints’ tour of the Island last week.Also touring the Island last week was Canada’s senior national netball team that recorded a clean sweep of victories in a three-match series with hosts Bermuda.
