Bermuda’s netballers lose again

Bermuda in action at the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, Scotland earlier this week

Bermuda ended their World Youth Netball Championships campaign on a losing note at Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland today. The Islanders slumped to their sixth defeat of the tournament after losing 49-56 to Singapore in a playoff for 15th place despite a flawless shooting display from goal attack Jasmyn Renfroe who drained every attempt at goal.Bermuda made a sluggish start to the match but rallied further down the stretch before ultimately coming up short of what would’ve been their second win of the tournament.Singapore’s shooters found their mark from the outset to give their team a comfortable 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.Bermuda pulled their socks up and applied more pressure in the second quarter. But they could not prevent their rivals, who held their shape at both ends of the court, from scoring.Renfroe did her best to keep Bermuda in the match. But her teammates struggled to get the ball to her inside the shooting circle as Singapore’s robust defending took its toll. After the match Bermuda coach Gina Benjamin praised her players for giving their all on court.“I’m very pleased with the effort that the girls gave me today,” she said. “All of them shone today.”Bermuda’s sole win arrived in a nail-biter with Malta (40-38) during the group stage.“The girls have done well,” said Bermuda Netball Association (BNA) President Tracey Sharrieff. “To achieve a win at this level is no easy feat — and they have achieved that.”This year marked Bermuda’s first appearance at the World Youth Netball Championships in nearly a decade.Bermuda’s netballers are due to return home from the UK on Sunday.
