‘Time was right’ for defending champs to pull out of the league

Data Tech Netts wing attack Tanika White says she and her former team-mates have no regrets about their decision to withdraw from the league.

The reigning Winter League champions dissolved after landing last season’s title without losing a single match.

White cited age and increasing work and family obligations as the reasons behind the team’s withdrawal.

“It’s more of a seasoned team with an average age anywhere between 45 and 30-something that has been playing for many years who have decided to retire,” she said.

“Some of the girls have been promoted at their job, some of them are newly married and as you get to a certain age you have other commitments.

“There’s just a whole lot of stuff going on and as you get older sometimes you have to know when to say ‘when’.”

White said bowing out of the league as champions was a perfect send-off.

“The right way to go out is as champions,” she added. “We lost tournaments but when it came to the league we didn’t lose one game, so it was a nice way to go out.”

Some of White’s former team-mates are either coaching or playing for Data Tech’s junior team, Signworx Netts.

“A few of them are still playing with the junior team like Nina Webb and Kimale Evans,” White said. “Most of the girls are giving back to the sport, coaching and mentoring our junior team.”

Signworx Netts finished third at last month’s season opening Sylvia Eastley round robin tournament at Bernard Park.

“It’s now all about giving back to our girls,” added White. “They (Signworx) came third in the tournament so as you can see they are doing pretty good.”

Data Tech Netts were among four teams who have pulled out from the Senior Winter League, the others being North Village Lady Rams, Lady Rams Too and DC Warriors.

Village Too and DC Warriors both struggled with player shortage last season and decided to disband while it remains unclear why Lady Rams folded.

SS Tigers and Robin Hood have merged to become Robinhood Tigers while Bluebird Juniors are the latest addition to the league that has dwindled from ten to six teams.

The 2013-14 league officially gets underway today with three matches on tap at Bernard Park.

Lady Bluebirds and Bluebirds Too will do battle on court one at 5pm while Robinhood Tigers will lock horns with Signworx Netts on court two with tip-off also slated for 5pm.

The remaining match will pit newly crowned Sylvia Eastley Tournament champs Warwick Pink Panthers against Blazzin Bluebirds who will start at 6:15pm on court two.
