Lady Bluebirds in title triumph

Danielle Raynor, far left, scored 57 goals to help Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds clinch a second Senior Winter Netball League title in three years at Bernard Park last weekend.

Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds clinched a second Senior Winter Netball League title in three years at Bernard Park at the weekend.

And they did so convincingly after chalking up a comfortable 63-37 victory over Robin Hood Tigers to reclaim the championship they surrendered last season to Data Tech Netts with a game to spare.

As she has so often done in the past, goal shooter Danielle Raynor, who celebrated her 29th birthday earlier this month, accounted for the bulk of Lady Bluebirds’ scoring with 57 goals while Arkeita Fubler chipped in with six.

Chaquita Simmons scored 19 points while Jahture Trott notched 18 for the Tigers. Raynor said: “Team work, fitness and training were all key to the team’s success. We trained at least twice a week.”

The daughter of late top cricketer, Sheridan Raynor, added: “Losing the title last season motivated us to do better this season. However, Data Tech Netts, who beat us last season, were not in the league this season, so that was kind of disappointing.”

Data Tech Netts were among four teams that withdrew from the league at the end of the 2012-13 season for various reasons.

With the championship already in the bag, Lady Bluebirds will look finish the campaign unbeaten when they face Bluebirds Too in their league finale on Saturday.

In last weekend’s remaining Senior Winter League matches featured, Signworx Netts and Warwick Pink Panthers — the only team to beat Lady Bluebirds this season in the Sylvia Eastley Tournament — recorded emphatic victories over Blazzin Bluebirds and Bluebirds Too.

Led by Danielle Onyia’s 72 goals, Netts thrashed Blazzin Bluebirds 80-23. Miesha Greaves replied with twelve goals for Blazzin Bluebirds.

Panthers also had things all their own way in a lopsided 64-21 victory over Bluebirds Too. The evergreen Debbie DeShields led Panthers’ charge with 38 goals while Darricka Sons added 23. Shondae Woods-Bell replied with twelve goals in a losing cause for Bluebirds Too.
