The Bermuda Ball Hockey Classic comes to a conclusion this weekend, with the Bermuda Ball Hockey Association playing host to teams from on and off the island at the rink at Pembroke Community Club.

“The Ex X Pats are literally guys who lived on the island from about 2000 to 2012 and now are living abroad, from Ottawa to Thailand; Vancouver and Toronto,” Mathieu Desjardins, of the BBHA, said. “They e-mailed each other and put a team in.

“The Boston team flew in on the day of their first game on Thursday and they are very big hockey fans. Canada East and West have some guys living in Bermuda. You also have guys from off island who are mixed in all those teams.

The event is a forerunner to the 2018 Masters World Championship, which takes place on the island from September 26-30 next year.

Desjardins is confident that the home team have acquitted themselves well, although Boston have won all four of their games so far.

“Bermuda are pretty strong contenders,” he said. “But Boston are in the driver’s seat.”
