Cherokee’s Ironman beats season’s best

Cherokee’s Ironman snatched the season’s fastest time away from Reel Patrol

Cherokee’s Ironman served notice that he is rounding into form during the third round of the harness racing season at Vesey Street.

Arnold Manders’s gelding posted a 1:04/2 in the Free for All with driver Darico Clarke to slash nearly a full second off the season’s previous fastest time of 1:05/1, achieved by Inwood Stables’s mare Reel Patrol and driver Kirista Rabain on the opening day of the season

Bermudian-bred Reel Patrol, the youngest horse in its time bar, came to within two-fifths of a second of equalling the new mark set by Cherokee’s Ironman en route to winning the second heat of the Free for All in 1:04/4.

Rabain had another memorable day as she chalked up another win with Inwood Stables’s mare JustWatchMe in the 1:05 – 1:06 time bar. She was also among a trio of women drivers earning trips to victory lane.

Andre Westerfield swept both heats in the slower 1:10/1 – 1:13 time bar with Something Royal while Candyce Martins guided Inwood’s Progress to victory in the 1:07/2 – 1:10 division.

The race day also witnessed two ponies move up a time bar.

ThisBabyRocks, driven by Christian Truran, and Special Gold, with Kiwon Waldron at the helm, both lived up to their names after advancing from the 1:13/1 & slower time bar.

Both ponies got a leg out in the third heat of their respective divisions, with ThisBabyRocks crossing the line first in 1:09/1 followed by Special Gold in second in 1:11 flat.

Special Gold was the first to advance after winning the fourth heat in 1:10/2 and was joined by ThisBabyRocks who finished second in 1:11 flat.

Truran and his brother Casey are off to blistering starts to the season and are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The siblings racked up six heat victories between them on different ponies.

Casey had two wins in the 1:06/1 – 1:07/1 division with Inwood’s Generation and another in the 1:07/2 – 1:10 division with Big Mean Machine.

As well as a victory in the 1:13/1 & slower division with ThisbabyRocks, Christian won two heats in the faster Free for All with ItsAllAboutMe.

Waldron was the remaining driver managing three victories, having also won two heats in the 1:13/1 & slower division with Gold-N-Glory. Harness racing continues on Monday at the Vesey Street racetrack with the first leg of the Best Three Series, starting at 1pm.
