Binns enjoys silver lining

Feeling proud: Bermuda bowlers Damien Matthews, far left, David Maycock, centre right, and Rickai Binns, far right, celebrate their silver medal win with coach Steve Riley in Barranquilla, Colombia, last week

For Rickai Binns, the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia, were almost perfect.

Along with Bermuda bowling team-mates Damien Matthews and David Maycock, Binns played an integral role in winning the silver medal in the men’s trios event last week.

The triumvirate finished with a total of 3,883 pins after six matches, with Binns shooting a perfect game of 300 — achieved by rolling a strike during every frame.

Binns fully expected medal success in Barranquilla and said the island’s team of six — also including Lamar Richardson, Duane Talbot and Levinc Samuels — was the strongest to have competed overseas.

“We went [to Barranquilla] with a solid group of guys — probably the most solid group of guys we have ever left the island with,” Binns said. “We had a lot of confidence and I think it paid off.

“Everybody banded together, supported each other, and three of us came away with silver medals in the trios event and that’s awesome for Bermuda. I managed to shoot a perfect 300 game — it was quite a trip!”

The 34-year-old said the medal win was a team effort and hailed the contributions of Matthews and Maycock.

“Damien and David stepped up and produced some big numbers throughout the tournament,” Binns said. “Without individual contributions from each one of us we would have never won silver.

“David stepped up in the tenth frame of the last game and needed a double for us to secure the medal. He didn’t have a great look going in but he managed to dig deep and threw two clutch strikes to secure the victory.”

The team will now turn their attentions to preparing for the World Championships in Hong Kong in November.

“The [medal win] is a huge confidence boost,” added Binns, who said the team trained at Warwick Lanes three days a week in preparation for Barranquilla.

“Now we have the World Championships to look forward to — it’s the biggest event bowling has to offer.”

Steve Riley, the Bermuda coach, and the team arrived home to a hero’s welcome at the airport on Saturday night.

“It’s very satisfying to see all of our hard work pay off,” said Riley, who has been coaching Bermuda since 2014. “These guys have put in a lot for time and effort, and it’s great to see everything fall into place. I was ecstatic.”
