Medal success for Jiu Jitsu Academy

The Open Mat Bermuda — Jiu Jitsu Academy enjoyed a medal haul at the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation Nogi World Championships in Anaheim, Los Angeles, last week.A squad of seven competitors took to the mats during the four-day, single-elimination event, which attracted more than 2,000 participants from all over the world.Aaron Dyer, the Open Mat Bermuda coach, fought his way through the brackets in the purple belt, master 3, 185lb class, eventually bringing home a hard-earned silver medal. Dyer, a Bermuda police officer, cements his place in history as the first Bermudian-born athlete to medal at an IBJJF World Championship.Another Bermuda police officer and Open Mat Bermuda coach, Chris Regan, earned bronze in the black belt, master 3, 202lb class, while Tom Gregory and Lonnie Bascome, along with yet two more BPS representatives, Rob Noddings and Milton Hill, narrowly missing out on podiums.On day four of the tournament, Jason McAlpine won gold in the blue belt, master 3, 175lb division, before taking on all comers in the open-weight class, and wrestling his way to the top of the podium for the second time that day. McAlpine brought two gold medals home to secure himself the position as the international No 1 ranked athlete in his class.Open Mat Bermuda train and compete out of Aries Sports Centre in Hamilton.
