Rivals aiming to build on momentum

Rivalry resumed: Simsfield Hardtimes and Google Me will go head-to-head in the traditional Boxing Day stakes races at Vesey Street

Simsfield Hardtimes and Google Me will be looking to continue their solid form of late heading into the traditional Boxing Day stakes races at Vesey Street.Expectations will be riding high for the two harness racing ponies that are competing in the aged division as they share the season’s fastest time of 1:01/3 which they achieved the same race day on December 14. Aaron Sims, who trains Simsfield Hardtimes, is encouraged by the gelding’s recent performances and believes he has more to offer.“I don’t think he’s done,” Sims said. “I think he has more left in him and we’ll see how that goes.”The 1:01/3 Simsfield Hardtimes posted was one fifth of a second shy of the gelding’s record and two-fifths shy of the overall track record, which stands at 1:01/1, and is held by Google Me.“It’s pretty impressive that he’s done that time this early out in the season where he’s still not one hundred per cent race fit,” Sims added. “We’re going into the aged stakes races for Boxing Day and New Year’s Day so hopefully we stand a good shot at that. Maybe we can get a rail and some warmer weather and he can go faster.”Simsfield Hardtimes will again be driven by Dylan DeSilva.“This is Dylan’s first full year with him,” Sims said. “He puts all the work in training him and all the rest of it and I think they are a really good match and it’s showing.”Sims’s gelding posted the fastest time of 1:02/3 during last weekend’s harness action at Vesey Street which was then equalled by rival gelding War Machine.Robert Lopes, who jointly owns Google Me with his son Tyler, admits his mare has her work cut among a formidable field.“I understand there’s five in that stakes (aged division) and, excluding Google Me, the other four so far this year have all ran personal best very fast times,” he said. “I wouldn’t say that I’m the favourite and if I had to pick anyone I would probably take Simsfield Hardtimes who I have seen run very good this year.”Google Me, who also holds the mare and four-year-old’s records, will be driven by Candyce Martins who Lopes believes has come on in leaps and bounds in the bike.“She has come a long way and I think she is one of the top drivers on the track, but doesn’t really get recognition for what she’s accomplished and deserves,” he added. The remaining Boxing Day stakes races will feature entries competing in the two-year-old, three-year-old and four-year-old divisions.Inwood Stables’ Somegoldsumwhere is among the favourites in the two-year-old division, Andy Stoneham’s Wiggleitjiggleit in the three-year-olds and Charles Whited’s Gold N Glory and Mello Family’s Thisbabyrocks in the four-year-old division. In previous years, the Boxing Day stakes races have served as a qualifier for the New Year’s Day stakes races. However, the format has been revised and will now see all entries compete over both race days with the winners to be determined by combined average fastest times. Boxing Day harness racing action starts at 1pm.
