Ruling party whip, Lovitta Foggo, will be her party’s general election candidate for St David’s.Ms Foggo is the incumbent in the area having wrested it away from Suzanne Roberts-Holshouser in 2007 with a 90 vote majority. She will run against Gaylynne Cannonier, of the One Bermuda Alliance, with whom she has familial ties.“I have resided in St David’s for near to 30 years and feel blessed to have raised my family here,” Ms Foggo said at the Alaska Hall unveiling.“Constituency three has been an extended family to me and I earnestly and unreservedly invest my time and energy for the benefit of creating a harmonious atmosphere with personal attention to each and every one of my constituents.”She cited achievements during her almost five-year tenure as the area MP, including establishing the Lambe Foggo Clinic and the St David’s Preschool, as well as securing “recognition of our local hero and educator/principal, Mr Hilton Richardson”.“There have been many challenges along the way and as your area representative, with the help of the community and our Government we have been able to overcome hurdles and have succeeded in improving the environment and spirit of St David’s,” Ms Foggo added.“With sustained effort, working to represent the interest of the constituency and with your support St David’s, together we can continue to work for the benefit of this constituency.”Asked what made the district special, Ms Foggo said that it had a “communal” and “familial” atmosphere and it was “at one time was almost isolated and cut off from the rest of Bermuda”.Ms Roberts-Holshouser had campaigned for the area to be Bermuda’s tenth parish. Ms Foggo said constituents were divided on that idea with some vigorously opposed and others in support, but noted that with time, St David’s “will become that self-sustaining community”.“I envision St David’s becoming an area where people in the area can find gainful employment within that specific area. I think the BLDC is looking to try and develop St David’s in that way.”Ms Foggo was also asked whether she made a distinction between ethical and lawful behaviour for public officials. She said that her actions are guided by what is ethical, in her view, and lawful.“I think when we are talking about morals and ethics, each person should be guided by what they see as morally correct and ethically correct and need to govern themselves accordingly.”
