Shops can open on Good Friday
Created: Mar 26, 2012 09:43 AM
Shops in St George’s will be allowed to open this Good Friday in order to keep cruise ship visitors entertained.
All senators in the Upper House supported the Public Holidays Amendment Act, which relaxes the long-standing rule forcing stores to stay shut for the religious holiday.
It means passengers aboard the
Azamara Journey cruise ship will be able to visit the East End shops and provide welcome custom for traders who have long complained their area is a ghost town.
The measure is a one-off for now but paves the way for similar legislation to be passed in future relating to other public holidays, except Christmas Day.
