Horton sworn in as House Speaker

PLP MP Randolph Horton has accepted the position of House Speaker.

Progressive Labour Party MP Randolph Horton is now being sworn in as Speaker of the House of Assembly.Mr Horton was the only MP nominated for the post this morning.He was nominated by Premier Craig Cannonier; Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley seconded the nomination.Mr Horton said he was proud and humbled by the honour and confidence imposed in him.“I will certainly do my best to endure that as we carry out our business it will be carried out in the best interests of the people of this Island.”One Bermuda Alliance backbencher Suzann Holshouser has been named Deputy Speaker.She was also nominated by Mr Cannonier, and the nomination seconded by Mr Dunkley.The Opposition released the following statement this afternoon: "The Progressive Labour Party wishes MP Mr KH Randoph Horton well in his role as Speaker of the House. We trust that he will preside over the affairs of the House of Assembly in a fair, organised, and respectful manner; one which provides both the Government and Opposition the opportunity for healthy debate on legislation and issues affecting our Country."
