OBA supports fight for social justice
The One Bermuda Alliance pledged to support the fight for social justice yesterday in the wake of the death of a black American at the hands of police officers.
Craig Cannonier, the Opposition leader, said the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last week was “egregious and chilling”.
Mr Cannonier added: “The events of the past week have been gut-wrenching and painful, revealing another example of inhumanity shown to a black male.
“It should never have been committed against anyone, but the fact that, yet again, a black person has been singled out is appalling. This has to stop.”
Mr Cannonier said the OBA condemned racism and backed people around the world who organised protests.
He added: “We strongly support social justice and inclusion for all and we must all work together to correct inequalities and the kind of structural racism we have just witnessed which, tragically, still remains far too common.
“We are our brothers' keepers. This important social duty requires an honest appreciation of the problems faced by many in our diverse communities.
“It also requires a political commitment to find solutions to those problems.
“The OBA has that appreciation and commitment and we will work with others who share these core beliefs.”
