Sick and disabled people will be able to vote in elections from their home, under amendments approved on Friday night.The Parliamentary Election Amendment Bill also allows blind and visually impaired people to vote through a tactile voting device, instead of having to be accompanied at the poll station.Wayne Furbert, the Minister for the Cabinet Office, told the House of Assembly: “The blind and visually impaired can now vote in secret like everybody else.”The Bill allows prison parolees to vote and enables those expected to be away or travelling to or from Bermuda on the day of an election to vote at an advanced poll. It also provides that the polling day for an election must be at least 40 days after the issue of the writ of election. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Bill enables the Registrar to impose requirements providing for physical-distancing.Craig Cannonier, the One Bermuda Alliance leader, welcomed the Bill but expressed his disappointment that it did not include a provision for absentee voting.Mr Cannonier said: “With these amendments it has not hit students who are away.“I am expecting that we will move ahead with absentee balloting,” Mr Cannonier added.“I know this government and the OBA are looking at how we can strengthen the integrity of that taking place.”
