The One Bermuda Alliance has said it looks forward to working with Rishi Sunak, the new British prime minister.

Cole Simons, the Opposition leader, said in a statement: “At a time when the country desperately needs stability, Mr Sunak appears to bring a steady hand to the role, along with his professional experience in international finance and merchant banking.

“This is also a very historic moment for the UK, as he is not only the first Asian prime minister, he is also Britain’s first prime minister of colour.

“Now the newly appointed prime minister has the colossal task of bringing the UK together and providing some degree of comfort to capital markets, both locally and globally.”

Mr Sunak got the prime ministerial seat after the resignation of Liz Truss, who had held the post for less than two months.

Bermuda is expected to be largely unaffected by the change in leadership as James Cleverly will remain foreign secretary.

David Burt, the Premier, congratulated Mr Sunak on Tuesday and said he would use a meeting between the British Government and Overseas Territories next month to engage with the new administration.
