Black history timeline reprinted

A book detailing Black history has been republished after its initial print run sold out.

Black History in Bermuda: Timeline Spanning 5 Centuries, put together by anti-racism charity Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda, hit the shelves in October 2020, but since then all 1,000 copies have been sold.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: “’The Timeline provides an unflinching and accurate account of the infrastructure of laws, customs, practices and behaviours that were specifically designed to oppress and persecute Black Bermudians for over 250 years.

“Crucially, it also celebrates those Bermudians of African descent who fought countless battles to overcome unyielding oppression, to work towards a more just Bermuda, to simply be treated as human beings and to be allowed to raise families.”

The spokeswoman said the charity intends to treat the publication as a “living document” introducing new research over time.

“Curb continues to gather, compile and incorporate new research into the publication, sourced from both overseas research and contemporary Bermudian historians, many of whom are cited in the bibliography and the acknowledgements.

“Accordingly, we ask the public to contact us if you notice an error or omission, or can provide research and citations for new material.”

Anyone who wishes to make an addition or correction is urged to contact Curb at admin@uprootingracism.org.

The Black History in Bermuda: Timeline Spanning 5 Centuries is available in book stores and pharmacies across the island, as well as the Curb offices.
