UK strike not expected to delay Bermuda passport processing

UK strike should not impact on passport applications, the Government says (File photograph)

People applying for Bermuda British Overseas Territories Citizen passports will not be affected by a strike in Britain, the Government has said.

Industrial action at HM Passport Office, which is expected to last until May 5, will leave application timelines remaining at 11 weeks, according to the Ministry of Economy and Labour.

However, people have been urged to get applications in as soon as possible for first-time travel documents and renewals.

A spokesman for the ministry said: “Since March 17, the Department of Immigration has sought information on the impact on Bermuda British Overseas Territory Citizen passport applicants.

“His Majesty’s Passport Office recently advised the ministry that the previously stated passport processing time frames of 11 weeks will remain unchanged.

“While this is good news, the strike is expected to continue until May 5, so BOTC Bermuda passport holders needing a first-time or renewed passport are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.”

The spokesman said that potential applicants should not make travel plans unless they have a valid passport.

He added that passport application forms and fee and bank details are available online at the Department of Immigration.

Changes coming into effect at the immigration department will mean that hours of operation will run from 9am to 4pm from April 10.

Passport and emergency applications, including short-term work permits, can be submitted at the front counter.

All other applications must be submitted via a drop box in the department's reception area.

The drop box outside the department will be removed from service, and work permits will be available for collection from a dedicated window at the front counter.
