Douglas De Couto has been appointed the new Shadow Minister of Finance by Jarion Richardson, the Leader of the Opposition.

Dr De Couto had previously served as the One Bermuda Alliance spokesman on finance in the Senate.

In addition to the post, Dr De Couto will continue as the Shadow Minister of Economic Development and the OBA spokesman in the Senate for works and engineering, tourism and legal affairs.

Announcing the appointment in a press statement this morning, Mr Richardson said: “Doug is not only an asset to the OBA and its Senate team, but to Bermuda as a whole.

“He is very analytical and possesses a wealth of knowledge in the international business sector. He is a man of integrity and is passionate about shaping a better Bermuda for all.

“His work in the Senate with his colleagues has exposed the PLP government’s numerous failures to restart our economy and their mismanagement of our country’s finances, which will be borne by our next generation.”

In a Twitter post Dr De Couto said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as the new shadow minister of finance by our leader, Jarion Richardson.

“Having served and spoken on finance in the Senate, I am eager to continue working diligently for the betterment of Bermuda's economic future.”

The position had been vacant since the retirement of Cole Simons last month.
