Senate approves amendments to pension legislation
The Upper House approved legislation today to strengthen safeguards for the pension plans of public officers.
Crystal Caesar, the Minister of Education, told the Senate that the Public Service Superannuation Amendment Act 2026 was intended to align the requisite legislation “with the approved policy intent, improve clarity and remove inconsistencies within the principal Act”.
The legislation amends the Public Service Superannuation Act 1981 to modify provisions that failed to reflect reforms introduced last year.
Ms Caesar said last October that the Public Service Superannuation Amendment Act 2025 had been passed to ensure the superannuation fund’s sustainability, with reforms to be phased in.
However, amendments were recommended after analysis and on the advice of legal, technical and actuarial teams.
Ms Caesar said the Government has “delivered on its promise” to reform the PSSF and start stabilising the fund, putting the pension plan on a stronger footing for the long term.
She added: “These proposed amendments will ensure we get it right for both current and future public officers’ retirement plans.”
