David Burt hailed the work of Grenada’s National Democratic Congress recently during an appearance at a rally for the political party.

The Premier was among a number of speakers who took the stage at the event last month held to recognise four years since the NDC returned to power in the Caribbean nation.

A government spokeswoman subsequently confirmed that Mr Burt’s visit was not covered by the Bermuda Government.

Trading PLP green for NDC yellow for the occasion, the Premier described Dickon Mitchell, the Prime Minister of Grenada, as a friend and a brother, and the NDC as a “sister party” of Bermuda’s Progressive Labour Party.

Mr Burt said: “My government and your sister party in Bermuda share a common belief with the NDC that government must work for ordinary people — not the rich man, ordinary people.”

He added that, four years ago, the people of Grenada chose a new generation of leadership, placing their trust in the NDC, with the party since delivering results.

Mr Burt said: “From the very beginning, [Mr Mitchell] understood that the success of government is measured by the lives that have been improved.

“That is why your government has placed such a strong emphasis on education. Because when people invest in education, you invest in people, and we have equipped young people with modern skills to prepare this nation for the future.”

He said he had invited Mr Mitchell to Bermuda for a PLP event, and the respect that he carries extends far beyond Grenada, calling him a man of action rather than of words.

Mr Burt told the rally that while every administration faces challenges and difficulties, the NDC had led the country through hurricanes and global pressures with focus on recovery, resilience, opportunity and the people.
