Soares elected as new BII chairman

New BII chairman Andrew Soares

Andrew Soares was elected the new chairman of the Bermuda Insurance Institute (BII) during the annual general meeting.

Also appointed to the new BII Council are vice-chairman Shannon Totten, honorary treasurer Philip Burrill, honorary secretary Carol Parker Trott, and immediate past chairman Chris Fisher.

Other Council members elected were Sandra DeSilva, Kathleen Faries, Roger Gillett, Leila Madeiros, Patrick Neal, Robert Paton, Chris Schaper, and Lynne Woolridge.

BII CEO, Dr. Dawnnelle Walker commented: “I am pleased to partner with Andrew and continue our efforts to create a world class learning, development, and assessment organisation specifically focused on effective talent development within the insurance, reinsurance, and related industries,”

Andrew Soares is a reinsurance professional with a background in underwriting, accounting and claims. He currently serves as Senior Vice President, International Treaty Underwriter for Platinum Underwriters Bermuda, Ltd., a leading provider of property and casualty reinsurance worldwide. Prior to joining Platinum Re, Andrew worked for Partner Re as a property catastrophe underwriter after transitioning over from managing their reinsurance accounting and claim teams.

Mr. Soares stated, “I am a strong proponent of the Bermuda re/insurance market and of Bermudians achieving their fullest potential within the re/insurance industry.”

For the last two years Andrew has served as Vice-Chairman at the BII and is also a recent past Chairman of the BII’s Education Committee, a role he served in for several years.

Andrew is also a past President and Treasurer of the Bermuda International Chapter of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Society.

Mr. Soares holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation, and an Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designation.

The BII is a registered charity and educational institution, funded by its insurance industry members.
