Students in BFIS speed networking sessions

Chance to learn: students quiz professionals in BFIS High School Speed Networking sessions

Ninety students are participating in the BFIS High School Speed Networking lunches this week to help them gain a clearer understanding of the wide variety of careers within the insurance sector from insurance professionals representing many different careers, educational backgrounds and skill sets.

Since 2014 BFIS has been holding these events in February for high school seniors seeking more information about careers in the insurance and related sectors, and up to six students from each high school are selected by their guidance counsellors to participate.

The sessions are broken into three separate groupings with the Monday session being held at Appleby this year for students interested in finding out more about actuarial science, law or computer science.

On Wednesday it will be the turn for those interested in accounting and finance at KPMG, and on Friday for students focusing on underwriting, broking and claims at XL Catlin.

Students rotate several times during the sessions giving them ample opportunity to talk to a number of professionals during the hour. This is followed by lunch and another chance to talk further with the professionals of their choice.

The feedback from these events is always excellent, with both students and professionals gaining from the experience. The students realise what a great opportunity it is for them to network with insurance professionals from many different companies and how valuable the advice they receive is as they plan their futures after graduating high school.

BFIS thanked Appleby, KPMG and XL Catlin for this year’s venues, and to professionals from Appleby, Arch, Argo, Argus, Aspen, BF&M, Deloitte, Everest Re, EY, Hamilton Group, KPMG, Lancashire¸ Logan Re, Marsh, Nephila Capital, Nova¸ PwC, Sompo International¸ Tokio Millennium Re, Trott & Duncan¸ Willis Towers Watson and XL Catlin who volunteer their time.
