Seminars will offer insurance insights

Insurance insights: the BII seminars will be held at O’Hara House, which is home to the offices of Axa XL, on Bermudiana Road (Photograph supplied)

The Bermuda Insurance Institute is offering seminars to help young professionals understand the basics of insurance, as well as the different parts that make up the industry in Bermuda.

The BII said the courses are aimed at junior level employees of insurance and reinsurance companies as well as people involved with the industry, such as recruiters, lawyers, accountants, bankers and IT professionals.

“This induction seminar is seen as a highlight of the educational calendar providing younger professionals and those with less experience a great insight into the different parts that make up our industry,” said underwriting specialist Victoria Cunningham, who has been teaching the course since 2010.

“Speakers come from our member companies with a variety of backgrounds and offer real life examples of the work they do. Not only is this a great educational opportunity, it also provides attendees the access to a wide range of professionals who can answer questions in an open environment.”

The seminars cover a range of topics including the history of the Bermuda market, basics of insurance, captives, reinsurance, lines of business, underwriting, broking and life insurance. This year there are new presentations on claims and insurance-linked securities, according to the BII.

All seminars take place at Axa XL, on Bermudiana Road, from 9am to noon. They will be held on April 23, April 25, April 30 and May 2. Refreshments are provided.

The cost is $500 for BII members, and $575 for non-members.

BII said the course has been preapproved for 10½ hours of CLE credits by the Bermuda Bar Association and may also qualify towards continuing professional development credits for other qualifications. A certificate of attendance will be issued to participants who attend all sessions.
