Canopius Group, the global specialty re/insurer, has appointed Coleman V. Johnson as chief underwriting officer, United States and Bermuda.

Mr Johnson joins Canopius USA’s growing leadership team as the company continues its expansion in the US.

He will report to Lisa Davis, chief executive, Canopius US and Bermuda, and Mike Duffy, Canopius Group chief underwriting officer.

Ms Davis said: “Coleman brings a diverse background within the insurance industry, leading teams and building solutions across industry verticals and business lines.

“His strategic vision and breadth of experience developing and operationalising successful growth initiatives will be a tremendous asset as we continue to grow our US and Bermuda operations and leverage the possibilities of our multi-platform approach.”

Mr Johnson said: “For a company like Canopius, with deep expertise and innovative solutions to help clients navigate through emerging risks, I see a world of opportunities for profitable growth.

The company said Mr Johnson brings more than 20 years of multifaceted underwriting and insurance leadership experience to his new role.

Most recently, he served as senior vice-president and chief underwriting officer, middle market, for Liberty Mutual. He previously held senior leadership positions at The Hanover Insurance Group and The Hartford.

Before Mr Johnson’s arrival, Ms Davis was acting US and Bermuda CUO in addition to her role as chief executive, Canopius US and Bermuda.

Under her leadership, Canopius USA has increased staff by more than 30 per cent since 2020.

Canopius is a global specialty re/insurer with underwriting operations in Bermuda, Australia, China, Singapore, Britain and the US.

It underwrites through Lloyd’s Syndicate 4444 (managed by Canopius Managing Agents Limited), a US surplus lines insurer, Canopius US Insurance Inc and Canopius Reinsurance Ltd, a Bermudian-based Class 4 reinsurer.
