RenRe tops Lloyd’s underwriter rankings
RenaissanceRe has been named the top underwriter at Lloyd’s in a survey of high-performing syndicates.
The Bermudian reinsurer manages Syndicate 1458, which topped the rankings in Insurance DataLab’s 2026 Underwriting Ratings.
Nine Lloyd’s syndicates received an Insurance DataLab Underwriting gold award this year, with Aegis-managed Syndicate 1225 finishing less than one tenth of a percentage point behind in second place and Brit-managed Syndicate 2987 completing the top three.
Insurance DataLab’s Lloyd’s Underwriting Ratings assess syndicates across three key measures — current-year underwriting performance relative to gross written premium, aggregate underwriting performance over the past three years, and improvement in underwriting performance over the latest 12 months.
This approach looks beyond performance in any single year, providing a more rounded assessment of underwriting performance by considering current profitability alongside longer-term results and recent improvement.
Syndicate 1458 tops the rankings with an overall underwriting rating of 77 per cent. The syndicate generated an underwriting profit of £92.6 million ($122 million) from gross written premium of £624.3 million in its latest accounts, up significantly from an underwriting profit of £18 million in the previous year.
That improvement earned Syndicate 1458 the maximum 95 per cent rating for year-on-year improvement and helped propel it to the top of the Lloyd’s rankings for the first time.
Last year’s winner, Aegis-managed Syndicate 1225, finishes less than one tenth of a percentage point behind Syndicate 1458 with an overall underwriting rating of 77 per cent.
Syndicate 1225 delivered an underwriting profit of £210.6 million from £835.9 million of gross written premium in 2025-26, while its aggregate underwriting profit over the past three years reached £506.4 million.
This resulted in current and three-year underwriting performance ratings of 78 per cent and 75 per cent respectively — the highest scores under both measures among this year’s Gold Award winners.
The result represents Syndicate 1225’s third Insurance DataLab underwriting gold award, having previously been recognised in 2023 before topping the rankings in 2025.
Brit-managed Syndicate 2987 completes the top three with an overall Underwriting Rating of 75.6 per cent.
Its underwriting profit increased from £32 million to £106.5 million over the latest year, earning the maximum 95 per cent improvement rating, while its aggregate underwriting profit over the past three years stood at £224.7 million.
The results highlight the value of looking at underwriting performance from more than one angle. By considering current performance alongside longer-term results and improvement, the ratings recognise both sustained profitability and syndicates delivering significant progress.
Other gold award winners were: Axa XL’s Syndicate 2003 (72.5 per cent); Chubb’s Syndicate 2488 (71.8 per cent); Apollo’s Syndicate 1969 (71.6 per cent); Blenheim Underwriting’s Syndicate 5886 (71.3 per cent); Tokio Marine Kiln’s Syndicate 510 (71.2 per cent); and MS Amlin’s Syndicate 2001 (71.2 per cent).
