Insurance registrations for first nine months up 18% on 2025
Bermuda recorded 51 insurance-related registrations in the first nine months of this year, an 18.6 per cent increase compared with the same time last year, according to the Bermuda Monetary Authority’s latest figures.
The 2026 figure comprised 42 insurers and nine intermediaries. By comparison, all 43 registrations reported through September 2025 were insurers.
There were four confirmed registrations in September 2026: Munitor Re, a restricted special purpose insurer, Cipher Underwriting and Kinetic Insurance Services Bermuda, both registered as agents, and Sun Life Bermuda, a Class C insurer.
Acumen Managers was an additional registration confirmed in August.
Restricted special purpose insurer registrations stood at 13 through September 2026, compared with 16 a year earlier, while collateralised insurer registrations dropped to five from eight.
However, Class E long-term insurance registrations increased sharply, from three in September 2025 to nine this year. These included businesses such as Axa Life Bermuda, Calix Re, West Grove Re and several Prudential and Global Atlantic entities.
The latest figures also show three Class 3A registrations and one Class 4 registration during 2026, categories in which no registrations were listed in the September 2025 report. Class 2 registrations, meanwhile, fell from five to three.
The intermediary category has also contributed significantly to this year’s higher overall total. Seven agents, one manager and one broker had been registered through September, bringing intermediary registrations to nine and the overall total to 51.
The BMA’s Insurance Assessment and Licensing Committee considered nine applications in September 2026, including six new applications and three carried forward from earlier periods. Eight were approved and one was deferred.
That compares with six applications considered during the same period last year, four new and two carried forward, all approved.
The authority cautioned that application approvals and registrations do not necessarily occur in the same reporting period because registration takes place only after the licensing committee process has concluded.
