Leaders Mariners chalk up another victory

Teachers 14 Mariners 18Mariners proved too strong for Teachers in the final league game of the year.Teachers, who lie in second position behind leaders Mariners, made a poor start, conceding a try early on with Mariners then winning a penalty but were unable to convert.However, Teachers soon recovered and played most of the first period in the Mariners’ half, winning a penalty which Shauntino Simons converted.But Mariners won another kick-off and a subsequent penalty which was taken quickly for a second try, but the conversion attempt was missed.Simons then added two more penalties, bringing the half to an end with the score at 12-9 for Mariners.In the second half, Teachers had most of the possession with David McHugh galloping up the left wing for Teachers’ first and only try of the game, which Simons was unable to convert.With the score at 14-12 to Teachers, the forward battle continued and Teachers were able to continue their good spell of possession and territory.Mariners’ superior rucking and mauling began to tell as Teachers conceded two penalties which were kicked over to make the score 14-18.Mariners attempted a few drop goals but missed them and Teachers’ Patrick Richardson once again burst over the line but somehow could not get the ball down for a try.Richard Boyd, on for the injured McHugh, was then unlucky to fumble a try-scoring chance.With only a few minutes left the pressure began to tell as Teachers rushed to get the ball wide, causing a number of handling errors.In the end it was too little too late and Mariners claimed a well-earned win which now takes them to seven points ahead of the chasing pack in the league.Police 31 Renegades 25Police scored tries from Neville Zuill, Andre Moolman and Nick West, with Dan Cole and Mike Kane kicking the remaining points.Renegades’ try scorers were Scott Slater, Phil Hall and Angus Warnoch.Hall added the remaining points with the boot.Teachers Ladies 2 Mariners Ladies 1Teachers’ tries came from Katie Wright, while Mariners’ try was scored by Lisa Henderson.Renegades Ladies 4 Police Ladies 0Renegades’ tries were scored by Laura Haynes, Magda Splatchik, Rose-anna Hoey and Amy Harvey.
