Minis support kids in need

The Bermuda Rugby Football Union's Mini Rugby programme joined forces with the Coalition for the Protection of Children to collect toiletries for kids in need.

The collection was co-ordinated so that each mini rugby age group were assigned an item, which they were asked to bring to the final Sunday session before the holiday break.

“Community is one of the foundations of rugby, and programmes like this are a great way to teach the kids how to give back,” said Patrick Calow, Bermuda Rugby Football Union's Youth Development Officer.

On the reasons behind the collection, BRFU communications officer Lauren Rothwell added. “Patrick and I really wanted to figure out a giveback programme that would foster the idea of kids giving back to kids.

“The coalition was the perfect partner for us, as we were able to teach the mini rugby kids about giving back while providing other children with important products.

“We also received some generous donations of books and toys, which we hope will bring holiday cheer to the recipients.”

The collection will have a huge impact on families over the festive period, who otherwise may have gone without.

“The products collected will support many of our families with much needed items that are expensive to purchase in stores,” added Kelly Hunt, executive director for the coalition.

“My favourite thing about this initiative is involving the young people. Instilling the spirit of philanthropy early is what will have the longest lasting impact.”
