Frans Smit and Alice Craig have been appointed as Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club's new captains for the 2027 season.

Smit succeeds Darren Richardson as men’s captain, with Jason Chlup and Simon Thompson serving as vice-captains.

Craig replaces Ciara Izuchukwu at the helm of the women’s team, backed by vice-captains Hannah Veitch and Anna McLeod.

Police Rugby’s new chairman Dylan Marshall praised Smit and Craig for their commitment to the club. Marshall also stated that Richardson was taking over as women’s coach.

“The appointments of Frans and Alice represent a natural progression for two individuals whose dedication, sporting integrity and exemplary service to Police Rugby have long been evident,” Marshall said.

“They now assume the mantle of leadership previously held by many distinguished figures in the club’s history. I have every confidence that they will acquit themselves with distinction.

“As rugby in Bermuda begins to experience a welcome resurgence, their stewardship will be instrumental in sustaining that momentum and broadening participation across the island.

“Also worth mentioning that Darren Richardson is stepping into the role of women’s team coach, but he will still be playing for the men’s side.”

A member of the title-winning team last season, Smit is keen to build on that achievement.

“It is a privilege to take over as captain of the Bermuda Police rugby team for the 2027 season,” the men’s captain said.

“Winning the league last year was a massive milestone for this club and it is a testament to this dedicated group.

“Our core focus stepping into the new season is consistency and sustained progression.

“We want to carry the momentum from last year forward on the pitch, while continuing to build and enjoy the team culture and bond we share off it.”

Now in her third season with Police Rugby, Craig started out as a newcomer to the sport.

“Coming into my third season on the team, I am super excited to be captain,” she said.

“I was a beginner to rugby and it has been so great to learn the game over the past three years with the Police women’s team.

“Hopefully, we will get some new ladies on board this year and I’m looking forward to being part of their rugby journey in Bermuda. Can’t wait for a season full of good vibes and fun times.”

Meanwhile, the club announced that preseason will begin shortly and welcomes anyone interested in trying the game, with all ages encouraged to attend the training sessions.
