Bermuda will be represented by four yachts in this year’s Newport Bermuda Race.Listed among the 177 entries are Dr Stephen Sherwin’s Corby 41.5, Nasty Medicine, Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s schooner, Spirit of Bermuda, Amanda Mochrie’s Class 40, 40 Degrees and Mark Watson’s R/P 74, Tiburon.Lawyer Mochrie and Argo Group CEO Watson will compete in yachts chartered from a private owner in the UK and the US Merchant Marine Academy.In the last Newport Bermuda Race Watson won the Open Division - comprised of the largest and fastest boats in the fleet - in a corrected time of 54 hours, 43 minutes and 32 seconds onboard the US Merchant Marine Academy -owned Dubois 90, Genuine Risk.The entry deadline for the Newport Bermuda Race expired April 15. However, yachts can still register for an additional late fee.To date 177 yachts have either been approved or still involved in the entry process for this year’s race, six fewer than the 183 yachts that participated in the last Newport Bermuda Race.Rives Potts’ 48-foot McCurdy & Rhodes sloop, Carina, won the coveted St David’s Lighthouse trophy for the second time in the previous ocean race while the Super-Maxi, Speedboat (later renamed Rambler), was the first boat across the finish line.Skipper George David and the crew aboard Rambler are among those registered to compete in this year’s Newport Bermuda Race.Rambler sparked a massive search and rescue effort after capsizing off the coast of Ireland during the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race. The Super-Maxi was leading the race at the time of the incident in which all 21 crew members survived.Meanwhile, widely experienced and successful racing sailor, Dobbs Davis, will provide online commentary during this year’s Newport Bermuda Race.The editor for Seahorse magazine has sailed in five Newport Races and other major races as navigator, tactician and sail trimmer and also did commentary for the World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) -sanctioned Argo Group Gold Cup in the past.“The Newport Bermuda Race is deservedly an ocean racing classic,” Davis said. “It brings in all the relevant tests of offshore sailing skills: boat and team preparation, weather and current analysis, sail selection and strategy, coordinated teamwork and safety.”Providing tracking services for the 635 mile race will be Yellowbrick Tracking Ltd.The Newport Bermuda Race, which comprises of six divisions (Open, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, St David’s Lighthouse, Cruiser, Double Handed and Spirit of Tradition), gets underway off Castle Hill, Newport June 15 and concludes several days later off St David’s, Bermuda.
