Rockal Evans’ bid for a third straight Bermuda International Invitational Race Week title in the Lasers hangs in the balance. The top sailor is nursing a lower back injury that threatens to put an end to his involvement in the 16-race series.Evans re-aggravated a lower back injury he suffered three- years ago shortly after racing concluded during the opening day of the invitational regatta.“The injury happened when I was pulling my boat up the ramp at Spanish Point Boat Club,” he said. “I pulled something out in my lower back which was not good at all.”Evans said he could barely get out of bed the next morning and eventually decided best to seek professional help.“I went to the physiotherapist for about half an hour and then went to the chiropractor afterwards,” he said. “They said it wasn’t as bad as it was before, but it’s not normal.”Evans will make an attempt to continue his quest for a third straight Race Week title when racing resumes today.“I am going to try to sail in tomorrow’s first race with a smaller rig (Laser Radial rig) and see how it feels,” he said. “But if my back doesn’t feel good then I’m not going to sail.”Evans has opted to go from the full rig to a smaller rig to help ease the strain on his lower back when hiking.“The smaller sail is actually faster in a bigger breeze because you don’t have to hike as hard and you can drive the boat and get more speed upwind,” he said.Evans’ compatriot Malcolm Smith currently leads the Laser fleet after five races. The past Sunfish World Champion laid down an early marker after posting four bullets and a third during Sunday’s opening day of the regatta in the Great Sound. The Laser fleet will contest their remaining races on the Alpha Course when racing resumes today after being postponed yesterday due to high winds.Another local, Tim Patton, currently leads the International Etchells fleet after four races. The evergreen skipper, who put in a respectable showing at this year’s Etchells World Championships Down Under, got his Race Week campaign off to a flyer after managing three successive bullets and a second-place finish on Sunday.Two-time World Champion John Burnham leads the International One Design (IOD) fleet after four races in the ‘A’ Series. The race for the ‘A’ Series is shaping up to be an intriguing one as only one point separates Burnham from second -placed Giles Peckham of England with only three races remaining in the series.Bermuda’s Penny Simmons, who managed three top five finishes on Sunday, currently sits in third in the 13-boat IOD fleet.Current Vrengen Cup holder Dan Faria sits in fifth, some 17 points off the lead.Stevie Dickinson and crew Pat Young clinched the five-race Comet series on Sunday with a race to spare. This year marked the Comets first appearance in Race Week in four years. For the first time in decades there are no J-Class boats competing in Race Week.
