Coronation Cup holders Contest II were the biggest winner during weekend fitted dinghy racing in St George’s Harbour.Skipper Somers Kempe and crew managed two seconds and a first to emerge as the high point boat on the day.Contest II’s sole win arrived in the third and final race for the Masters Cup.Skipper Kempe and his well drilled crew managed to cope best in Sunday’s shifty conditions.“It was a very long and tricky day and the conditions were very challenging,” said Royal Bermuda Yacht Club vice-commodore Kempe.“The breeze was all over the place and was very unpredictable. But we did a few things right to get a 2-2-1.”Contest II currently holds a double-digit lead atop the 2012 Coronation Cup points standings.Second highest point boat on the day was Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club’s Elizabeth II skippered by Jon Nicolls.Elizabeth II won the opening two races to capture the ER Williams Cup and Middleton Shield but were denied a clean sweep of top honours after sinking in the third and final race.“Unfortunately we messed up what should have been a great day by sinking in the third race,” Nicolls said.“But the two wins were great, sailing the boat in very trying conditions.“I’ve got a couple of young guys who have come up through the dinghy club sailing programme and they were in the boat calling the tactics and did a great job.“They sailed the boat really well in trying conditions and came out with two great results.”Elizabeth II is currently second in the 2012 Coronation Cup points standings.St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club’s Victory IV managed three thirds while Sandys Boat Club’s Challenger II had a second and two fourths.Challenger II and Victory IV are currently third and fourth in the 2012 Coronation Cup points standings.
