Bermuda pair excel in IODA regatta

Young Bermudian Chase Cooper placed fifth overall in the recently concluded IODA North American Championships held on local waters.

Sailing stars Chase Cooper and Ceci Wolmann underlined their potential, producing podium displays at the recently concluded IODA North American Championships held in Bermuda.Cooper, Bermuda’s Optimist Dinghy Association’s (BODA) 2012 Sailor of the Year, placed fifth overall in 177-boat Optimist fleet and second among the North American sailors.Wolmann also did herself and the Island proud after finishing as the top North American female and ninth overall.Saltus student Wolmann posted three top-three finishes that included a bullet during the international regatta while Warwick Academy’s Cooper produced two podium displays."I was very happy that Chase and Ceci lived up to their potential and made it to the podium,” commented Bermuda coach Martin Jenkins. “They sailed well and made their country proud with eight top ten finishes between them, six of them in top five.”Jenkins was also impressed with the performances of Campbell Patton, son of veteran Etchells sailor Tim Patton, and Joe Arrowsmith who both placed among the top 50 sailors. Patton finished 38th and Arrowsmith ten spots back in 48th.“Campbell Patton improved each day and ended up in 38th place with two top ten races and another two finishes in the top 20,” added Jenkins. “Joe Arrowsmith's top 50 performance was fantastic, including his two top ten finishes, one being a bullet.”Mikey Wolmann (82), brother of Ceci, Tayte Stefaniuk (90) and Camille Chin Gurrent (99) all placed among the top 100 sailors.“I was also impressed by the younger sailors and the way they handled their first IODA championships,” Jenkins added. “The future looks very good for Bermuda.”Argentina's Dante's Cittadini won the regatta by comfortable 12-point margin over nearest rival Samuel Neo (Singapore). Argentina’s Martina Pisani rounded off the top three and finished as the top female in the fleet.USA II won the North American Team Racing Championship while Singapore claimed the Nations Cup trophy involving non-North American countries during the largest one-design regatta ever held in local waters.Prior to this year, Bermuda last hosted the Optinam in 2002 which was won by local sailor and future Olympian Jessie Kirkland.
