Sailors remain in medal hunt

Veteran sailor Malcolm Smith competes in thee Laser Standard Rig class.

Bermuda’s sailors stepped up the hunt for medals during day two of NatWest Island Games sailing in the Great Sound.Malcolm Smith ended the day at the top of the Laser standard rig leader board while compatriot Brett Wright led the Laser Radial fleet after four races.Kalin Hillier is second in the Laser Radial standings, a mere three points behind the more experienced Wright.Hillier, the youngest member on Bermuda’s sailing team, underlined his potential by scoring a bullet in the fourth race. However, the day well and truly belonged to Smith who capitalised on perfect racing conditions and the misfortune of previous leader Niklas Areschoug (Ynys Mon). Areschoug slipped from first to fourth after being penalised for going over the line early at the start in the fourth race.Racing in five to ten knot southwest breezes around the six-leg windward-leeward racecourse, Smith posted a fourth and a second to remain thick in contention for medal honours.“It was an amazing day of sailing,” the past world Sunfish champion said. “The conditions were perfect for sailing.”Also representing Bermuda in the Laser standard rig is Rockal Evans who remained in sixth after posting finishes of fifth and third.Despite not making any headway in the standings, Evans was encouraged by the day’s showing.“I was pretty pleased with the way things went,” he said. “Malcolm and I were pretty consistent.”Evans played the shifts fairly well to maintain good boat speed around the racecourse.“The breeze was oscillating left and right so you really had to work the racecourse,” he said. “You really had to work the shifts the whole way up and even downwind you had to work the boat.”Wright managed two seconds that injected further life into his medal bid while teammate Hillier had a fifth in the day’s opening race to go with his bullet.Bermuda (36) led the team event by seven points over second placed Ynys Mon (43) after four races. In third is Aland with 59 points.Meanwhile, Bermuda’s Alex Jones remains in contention for a medal in the NatWest Island Games Sailboarding competition despite losing ground on the leader board.Jones endured mixed fortunes on a day which saw him post two sevenths, an eighth, a fifth and a fourth to end the day on 45 points — six behind second place Bernat Coll Pons (Menorca) and one point ahead of Pierre Le Page Guernsey).Bermuda’s Scott Mello (53 pts) and Peter Riihilouma (112 pts) ended the day in seventh and 11th among the 14 participants.Andrew Petts (Cayman Islands) leads the Sailboarding event with 29 points.
