Rockal Evans has enjoyed another successful week in Australia.

Since taking up residence in Australia six years ago, Evans has become accustomed to picking up honours and that trend continued on Tuesday when he and the crew aboard helmsman James MacPhaile’s boat secured third place honours in the 5.5m Class Australian Championship in Sydney.

The team produced six top-three finishes, including two victories, in the nine -race series spread across three days in variable conditions.

“The first day was very challenging with the wind conditions being tricky and hard to read, so our first day was our worst day for points,” Evans told The Royal Gazette.

“The last two days we wer the best boat of the day asthe boat scoring the lowest amount of points for a single race day.”

Defending champion John Bacon and his boat Ku-Ring-Gai pipped rival Tom Spithill’s Rhapsody for the title by a solitary point at the regatta hosted by Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and contested on the waters of Pittwater from February 26 to 28.

Evans and his colleagues exceeded their expectations after entering the championship at the eleventh hour.

“We went into the event not expecting much because we only decided to do the event last minute and had one training day,” Evans said.

“I think the keys to success to get this result was we worked well together as a team, the communication was spot-on with no second guessing of what to do when and where on the racecourse,” Evans said.

“I was middle man so I was in control of the main sail on upwind and trimming the spinnaker on downwind and another of my roles was tactician,” he explained.

Evans was making his second appearance with MacPhail’s team who narrowly missed out on the podium after finishing fourth at last year’s championships.
