Sebastian Kempe captured the silver medal in his age group to restore some pride at the Laser Under-21 World Championships in Tangier, Morocco, at the weekend.

Out of contention for regatta honours heading into the final races in the gold fleet, the Bermudian sailor pressed on and managed to finish second in the under-19 boys division and eleventh among the overall 115-strong fleet to come away from the event with something to show for his efforts on the water.

Despite not performing his best and falling short of his primary objective of improving upon his fifth place showing at the same event last year held in Vilamoura, Portugal, Kempe is determined to put lessons learnt from the experience to good use moving forward.

“This is event is not my best but there are a lot of good takeaways from it that I can use in the future,” the 18-year-old told The Royal Gazette.

Kempe, who was making his debut competing on the African continent at the event, was the top qualifier heading into the gold fleet but ultimately lost precious ground during the business end of the regatta.

The promising sailor has already enjoyed success competing on the international stage having won Bermuda’s first gold medal in the men’s Laser Radial at the Youth Sailing World Championship in Oman last year.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Ole Schweckendiek took home the gold medal in the under-19 boys division, his first victory at the championships, and Spain’s Viktor Kateliev the bronze to round off the podium.

England’s Finley Dickinson secured overall honours for the first at the event, with Ukraine’s Oskar Madonich earning the silver medal and New Zealand’s Caleb Armit the bronze.
