Disqualification in first race puts Kempe on back foot in France

Sebastian Kempe has no room for error after a frustrating opening day at the Olympic Week Regatta in France.

Kempe, competing in the Ilca 7, made the worst possible start to the event after being disqualified from his first race in red fleet after crossing the start line prematurely during the final minute before the race.

With just 45 of the 136 entrants making it through to gold fleet after five races, Kempe had his work cut out if he wants to make it into the top echelon of sailors after the preliminary series comes to a conclusion.

However, Kempe is adept at putting one bad race out of his mind and he displayed that ability again when finishing a decent eleventh in his only other outing. He now sits 99th overall after day one

It was a better day for compatriot Campbell Patton, who is in a gold fleet qualifying position after putting in a couple of good performances in blue fleet. Patton finished 25th and twelfth in his two races, which places him 33rd overall.

There are a trio of Bermudians in action on the water in Hyeres this week, with Olympian Adriana Penruddocke competing in the Ilca 6.

After finishes of 28th and twelfth in her two races, Penruddocke occupies 37th position and her coach, Shaun Priestley, was pleased with how the day went.

“It was a really tricky day with light winds,” he said. “It was nice to see some progress in the light airs at this level, but it’s only day one and there is a lot more racing to go.
