Bermuda primed for Team Racing World Championship challenge
Bermuda’s sailors are hoping to make a bright start to the 2026 Team Racing World Championship in Stockholm, Sweden, today.
The island is being represented by two teams led by skippers Alan Frith and Joshua Greenslade, which also includes Amelia Lewis, Cecilia Wollman, Samantha Dill, Sebastian Round, Emily Davis and Aiden Young.
The Bermuda contingent got the opportunity to test the waters while training with regatta hosts Sweden during yesterday’s official practice day.
“We spent some time warming up and getting comfortable with the boats and the venue before getting to do some practice starts and races with the Swedish team. The conditions at the venue are very shifty and gusty, quite similar to Hamilton Harbour,” Frith told The Royal Gazette.
“Spirits are high and we feel quite comfortable with the conditions based on how similar it is to Hamilton Harbour.”
Greenslade has been appointed as the skipper of Boat 1, whose crew also includes Lewis, Young and Davis.
Frith will be at the helm of Boat 2 competing alongside Wollman, Dill and Round.
Bermuda finished tenth of the twelve teams at last year’s Team Racing World Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, which they are hoping to improve on this time around.
“Any improvement over last year’s tenth place finish will be a success and, if we sail well, ending up in the gold fleet [top six] should be attainable,” Frith said.
“There are a lot of good teams and the defending champions, Corinthian Yacht Club out of Marblehead, are probably the team to beat. Newport Harbor Yacht Club and the British, Irish and New Zealand teams were all near the top last year, and we expect them to be very good again.
“We handled the Swedish team pretty comfortably in our practice races with them. But being a practice race can skew some things, so we won't be taking anyone lightly. We have limited experience with the other teams here.”
The 2026 Team Racing World Championship will be held from August 12 to 16 on the waters of Riddarfjärden, with racing being contested in the one-design J80 class.
