One family renewed their love of Bermuda at the Gold Cup this year.

Jon Gundersen, part of the winning crew, and son Ollie, who was competing in the Junior Gold Cup, were together on island for the first time since they lived here for a couple of years a decade ago.

Gundersen’s wife, Sarah, worked for Artemis Racing in the build-up to the 2017 America’s Cup, which was held in Bermuda. Son Ollie had his 3rd and 4th birthdays on island and even featured on the front page of The Royal Gazette when taking part in the Fattiremassive mountain bike series.

“He’s obviously seen a lot of photos and he remembers a lot,” Dad Jon said.

“He remembers things like his birthday parties and lots of lobsters, because I used to go diving for lobsters a lot back then. He remembers a lot of that stuff but he was still pretty young.

“That’s why it’s just so awesome to get him back because he’s seen all the photos. He’s 12 now and so it's super cool that he gets a chance to see it all again and refresh the memories.”

Gundersen, who formed part of Christian Hamilton’s winning crew, was tasting victory in the event for the first time and being back in Bermuda brought with it plenty of time for reminiscing.

“I came and did my first Bermuda Gold Cup with Gavin Brady and I was probably 21 or 22, so 30 years ago now,” Gundersen said.

“Then I lived in Newport for a while, so I did a lot of Newport to Bermuda races when I was really young. When we moved here for the America’s Cup, it had been a long time since I’d been here, but when we got here, we just loved it.

“It was a huge event for Bermuda to have, the America’s Cup and we lived on the other side of the island in Sandys East and Ollie went to Tree Tops Nursery with all the local kids.

“We had a little 18ft sea craft and we would just go diving and fishing. It was amazing and Ollie would be always out with us on the boat.”

Despite the hectic Gold Cup schedule, Gundersen still had time to visit his local lobster haunts as he was staying with Olympian Peter Bromby.

“We flew in early and basically left on Friday when school finished,” Gundersen said.

“We stayed at Peter’s house on Saturday night and on Sunday took his boat for the day. I took the boys out on the other side of the island and we went snorkelling and went mucking around on the wreck for ages.

“I found all my old lobster spots on my GPS, so I took them and showed them, which was cool as there was still a lobster there.”
