Rockal Evans warms up for Star Sailors League in Thailand
Bermuda’s Star Sailors League captain Rockal Evans is entering the competition in good form after performing well in Thailand this week.
Evans, who was competing at the Thailand Pathu Championships in Jomtien on British boat Doolalli, was just beaten into second on countback after nine races.
Doolalli, helmed by Colin Simonds, won the final race and finished second in three others to tie on points with Pine Pacific, driven by Ilhinai Yingsiri, who was declared the winner.
Evans has formed a good relationship with Simonds and was pleased to team up with him again.
“I did two events with Colin and the first was kind like a warm-up regatta at the beginning of the week,” Evans said.
“We had two new young crew members, so the first regatta was practising everything and we finished fourth out of six. Then we had one rest day before the second event, in which we finished tied for first, but we lost the tie-break.
“It was a very tricky, shifty venue. The crew got a lot better than the first event, so our results showed that. This was my fourth event with this team and Colin and his wife always hire me to sail with them in Thailand in these boats.”
Evans is now on his way to Rio de Janeiro, where he will lead Team Bermuda into action at the Pan American qualifiers for the Star Sailors League Gold Cup.
Bermuda have been drawn in a group with Cuba, El Salvador and Mexico, with racing set to start on November 12. The winner of the group will make it into the Gold Cup with the runner-up facing another round of qualifiers.
