It's do or die time for Darrell's side

Bermuda Under-20s head to Florida tomorrow for their final preparations ahead of next week's do or die World Cup qualifiers in Suriname.Their mission: to claim the final qualifying spot for the 12-team Concacaf Championships which would see them take on regional powerhouses like the United States, Mexico and Jamaica.Standing in their way are hosts Suriname, Guyana and Netherland Antilles, with Bermuda having to top the group next week to reach the mouth-watering Championships. All three teams finished as group runners-up in the previous round and Bermuda Under-20s coach Gary Darrell is expecting a trio of tough games.“We expect all three teams to be strong. Suriname are traditionally a tough team and if Guyana's senior team, who I saw play recently, are a reflection of their under-20s then they will be a test also. I know very little about Netherland Antilles,” said Darrell, who will be accompanied to Suriname by assistant coaches Devarr Boyles and Maurice Lowe as well as technical director Derek Broadley.Darrell's side will have star player Reggie Lambe on board to boost their qualifying chances. Lambe, 19, was given permission by Ipswich Town to join with the Under-20s by the club's former Town manager Roy Keane, who was sacked last week. Since then Town have appointed Paul Jewell as their new manager and have not indicated a change in their position regarding Lambe's availability.Ex-Washington Diplomats midfielder Darrell believes Lambe's extra experience and professionalism will prove invaluable in Suriname and said he would skipper the side.“Reggie had a big impact for us during our last group matches. You could tell all the other boys really look up to him and he is a leader for us. Everyone of them agreed that Reggie should be the captain of this side,” he said. Due to overseas school commitments, Daniel Andrade has not been included in the 19-man squad and Darrell admits the loss of the versatile Somerset Eagles' player had served as a blow.“Daniel will not be able to join us because of school commitments. It's a shame because he's a player who keeps on impressing in a number of positions,” Darrell said. The Under-20 squad fly to Suriname from Miami on Sunday where they will play three matches at Franklin Essed Stadium, on artificial turf.Darrell, who played in Suriname for Devonshire Colts in a Concacaf Club Championships many years ago, added: “We know that we'll be playing on a synthetic pitch and we hope it's similar to the one we have at BFA Field. As for the conditions, it's difficult to make too many preparations, so we'll have to adjust when we get there.”Terrin Smith and Anthony Hunter are the only two additions to the squad which finished second in their qualifying group in Guadeloupe back in October. The Concacaf Championships will be held in Guatemala in April.Bermuda Under-20 squad: Tahj Bell, Corey Richardson, Reggie Lambe, Quadir Maynard, Shannon Burchall, Roger Lee, Casey Castle, Troy Tucker, Terrin Smith, Jaylon Bather, Anthony Hunter, Rakeem DeShields, LeJuan Simmons, Dante Leverock, Errin Smith, Reiko Trott, Aaron Nelson, Dunte Albouy.
