Colts force replay against Cougars

Devonshire Cougars 1St. George’s Colts 1St. George’s Colts coach Richard Todd hailed his team’s fighting spirit as they held defending FA Cup champions Devonshire Cougars to a draw at Devonshire Rec yesterday.Colts had to come from behind after Jamie Smith had put the champions ahead early in the first half before Clay Darrell levelled midway through the second to force a replay.“This game showed that the team does have character, we came from behind against the defending champions and in sticking there towards the end was pleasing,” he said.“Our second half was better, we managed to get forward more and looked to be more positive and trouble them a bit.”It was the champions who had the better of the play for long spells of the match and only have themselves to blame, missing a multitude of chances throughout the match.Smith’s strike seemed to be just what they needed as raid after raid was laid onto the St. George’s goal, albeit to no avail as the sides went into the break just separated by the single goal.Kwame Steede watched in agony as his scissor kick went inches wide of the far post, while Moses and Tumani Steede both tried their luck as the hosts went searching for the all important second goal.Todd made a double substitution, bringing on Neil Paynter and Oronde Bascome and the pair sparked the side into life as they looked to get back into the match. It would be Darrell who would claw the side back into the game when he took advantage of some slack defending at the back for Cougars deep in their half and slammed his effort hard and low to the back post to square up the match.Cougars continued their siege on the Colts goal after the setback, but the bend but don’t break strategy for the visitors paid off as they earned a replay.“We made double substitution in bringing on Neil Paynter and Oronde Bascome and Paynter needed to be put in because they were serving a lot of ball into the area and exploiting a weakness, but he has the experience to get in there and sure things up,” said Todd.“By doing this we allowed David Signor more room to attack pushing him forward with Oronde finding his passes through the middle.”Devonshire Cougars: R Brangman, T White, K Franks, J Seymour, K Tucker, M Steede, C Caisey, T Steede, K Steede, D Coddington, J SmithSubs not used: D DanielsYellow cards: Seymour, M SteedeGoals: Smith, 7St. George’s: N Trott, D Signor, J Hayward(N Paynter, 45), J Hayward, J Warren, G Wade, J Bassett(J Carlington, 76), M Dickinson (Oronde Bascome,45),C Simmons, J Dickinson, C Darrell, C SimmonsSubs not used: C Hill, M Paynter, J DarrellYellow card: C SimmonsReferee: R CannMan of the Match: Caisey (Cougars)
