Village’s fate is in their own hands
North Village skipper Sammy DeGraff expects an exciting game at Bernard Park tomorrow when his side tackle St. George’s looking to sustain their lead at the top of the Premier Division table. The two sides go into the game having had vastly different build ups, with Village having two weeks off, while this will be Colts’ third game in a week, and the East End club are likely to be carrying some tired legs come kick-off.DeGraff is anxious to see what the game throws up knowing that his side must keep their momentum going if they are to win the league.“We are into the second half of the season and this is the business end so we have to continue going from strength to strength and getting points where we can to keep our momentum going.“St. George’s are a quality team, I’m not surprised at the position they are in because they have an excellent coach, a good core group of players and they definitely have what it takes to hold their own in the league.“It should be a good game, they are coming off a loss and will be looking to bounce back in this match so this should make it that more interesting.“It is a league game and we don’t want to drop any points given the position we are in.”Village’s long layoff is attributed to being knocked out of the FA, which may be a blessing given the heavy fixture pile up that some teams are currently preparing for. One thing not in the side’s favour is the run in to the league, with their least three matches on the road.Regardless of the scenarios that can play out before the season ends, DeGraff knows the fate of his side rests in their own hands, not anyone else’s.“We have been training since our last game because we were knocked out of the FA Cup, and in that sense this game seems to be tricky as they seem to be a team that is off but if we think that way we can be setting ourselves up for failure.“They have had three games in the week and we haven’t played so it comes down to putting your best foot forward on the day, so it should be interesting.“We know what they are capable of and last time we beat them 1-0 and I expect nothing different in this match from the last as it was evenly contested.“We have one or two more games at home so we need to make the most of these games, we can’t be worried about what everyone else is doing we just need to take care of our results and whatever happens with the others so be it.“This is our main focus, ourselves and we are playing a very good team that we must put our all into.”Second place PHC host Somerset Eagles at Southampton Oval looking to gain ground on Village should they slip up, while champions Dandy Town travel to Police Field tackle bottom club Devonshire Colts. At Lords, St. David’s welcome Devonshire Cougars with Boulevard locking horns with Southampton Rangers tonight at BAA Field.
