Blazers edge past out-of-sorts St. George's

Boulevard 2 St. George’s 1Boulevard’s top flight status safety is all but guaranteed for next season after they defeated a below par St. George’s at BAA Field yesterday. With four games of the season remaining Blazers are now 11 points clear of the relegation zone.Blazers’ victory was made all the more impressive considering they were without top scorer Temiko Wilson who was sentenced to six months in jail last week following a drugs bust.Defender Ajani Gibbons opened the scoring for the hosts in the 37th minute with a well-taken penalty after Angelo Simmons had been pulled down in the box following a mazy dribble. But Blazers’ lead was short-lived, however, with St. George’s target man Mackie Crane heading home from an inswinging corner just before the interval.Richard Todd’s St. George’s had arguably shaded the first half but seemed strangely sluggish after the break with their passing uncharacteristically sloppy. Both Simmons and Jason Davis went close for Blazers with long distance strikes before youngster Shenouda Outerbridge finished smartly after latching onto a superb chipped pass from the industrious Jason Davis.Colts created very little in the second half with their best chance falling to the feet of their young striker Clay Darrell whose shot from an acute angle hit the side netting of Shejaun Swan’s goal. Blazers’ interim coach, Troy Smith believed Blazers had more than deserved their “valuable” three points.“It’s a good win for us as St. George’s have been having a good season,” he said. “It’s an important victory for us and we look like we’re going to be safe now this season. I thought we deserved the win and we’re the better team in the second half.”Blazers take on league leaders North Village at Bernard Park next weekend.Boulevard:S Swan, A Gibbons, A Simmons, J Davis, A Foggo, R Wilson, J Crockwell, R Burgess, S Outerbridge (H Outerbridge, 88), T Lowe, A Francis.Subs not used: N Smith, Z Stovell, D Butler, T Stovell.Goals: Gibbons (pen) 37, S Outerbridge, 64.St.George’s: N Trott, E Signor, P Anderson, J Bassett, D Signor, O Bascome (Jeremy Hayward, 78) C Simmons, J Dickinson, J Carlington (A Douglas, 80), C Darrell (Jameau Hayward, 65), M Crane.Subs not used:D Smith, C Hill, K Greaves.Goals: Crane, 42.Referee: A Mouchette.Man of the match: J Davis (Boulevard).
