PHC keep pressure on leaders

St David’s 0PHC 2PHC have struggled in front of goal all season, things were no different at Lords and it nearly cost them dearly.Kyle Lightbourne’s side squandered enough chances yesterday to win three games, and only a clumsy challenge from St David’s defender Shea Pitcher, plus a defensive mix-up at the very end, allowed them to win a game that could have quite easily got away from them.In contrast the home side, who played markedly better than in previous weeks, created little and had goalkeeper Corey Richardson to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable.Richardson pulled off a series of fine saves, including a super one-handed effort that denied PHC striker Antwan Russell at the death, and the only blemish on an otherwise impressive performance by the shot stopper was the part he played in the visiting team’s second goal. The first goal had come when Pitcher gave substitute Russell just enough of a nudge to allow him to fall over in the penalty area.Seconds earlier the PHC striker had skipped past Pitcher and the clumsy attempt the defender made to rescue the situation was as inevitable as Omar Shakir scoring the resulting spot kick.Even so, the fact that it had taken PHC more than 70 minutes to find a way through St. David’s’s defence shows just how close they came to blowing their title chances. From the very first minute when they hit the side netting, Kyle Lightbourne’s side were awful in front of goal.Lloyd Holder headed over from two yards out, Cecoy Robinson blasted over, Aquino Grant fired wide, and in all they missed nine gilt-edged chances all before half time. They nearly paid for it as well, with, first, Shakir, and then Robert Richardson, having to make a desperate blocks to deny Angelo Cannonier as the half drew to a close. It was more of the same after the break, although St David’s did become more adventurous after they reverted from five across the midfield to playing two upfront. The longer the game went on the more it seemed likely that PHC would come away with nothing. But then Pitcher fouled Russell, and as the clock wound down a long ball was launched into the St David’s penalty area, Corey Richardson and his defenders allowed it to bounce, the ball found its way to Cecoy Robinson, who finally found the back of the net from eight yards out.St David’s: C Richardson, A Wolfe, S Pitcher (A Crockwell, 83), D Outerbridge, T Webb-Caisey, D Butterfield, F Crockwell, S Robinson (D Paynter, 33), L Minors, O Minors, A Cannonier.Sub not used: F Sewell.
