St. David’s leave it late against Colts
Devonshire Colts 0St. David’s 2St. David’s all but condemned Devonshire Colts to First Division football next season with their win at Police Field. The victory, courtesy of goals from Angelo Cannonier and Fiqre Crockwell, hoisted the Islanders up two places in the table and out of the relegation zone, while the loss leaves Colts nine points adrift with three games to play and an vastly inferior goal difference to those above them. With results going in their favour with both Somerset Eagles and Southampton Rangers both losing yesterday, St. David’s are now three points clear of the second and final relegation spot.“We have to take one game at a time with the position we are in, and this win is enormous for us,” said striker Otis Minors. “It was vital that we got the three points today and we want to treat each game as if it was a final, which in turn will get us a result which is what we are looking for. If we keep working as a team and for one another then it will work out for us because there are only three games left and anything can happen.”Warriors made things happen late on to spare themselves blushes, with both goals coming deep into the match. Neither side created much in front of either goal until the dying stages of the match.Kyle Jones was the hosts main menace in front of goal, while Cannonier, who had been substituted on in the second half, and Minors were trying their best to grab the all-important first goal that would have settled matters. And it was Cannonier who headed his team into the lead in the 89th minute from a Minors free kick to put the visitors up.Crockwell then got his goal one minute later to seal all three points and move the side out of relegation.Minors added: “We have always been in this position, going up then going back down and we looked like an elevator team, but this year we have two excellent coaches, and the players are starting to buy into the plan that is set out in fron t of them. Hopefully this helps us in our run,the FA Cup games coming up is a bonus but our priority is survival.”Devonshire Colts: G Rose, E Wilkin, B Robinson, Q Jones, C Durham, J Washington, T Foote, M Burch (M Pace,78), J Khan, K Jones, C Trott (Z Darrell, 72)Sub not used: Z morris, M PiperSt. David’s: C Richardson, D McCallen (S Richardson, 65), S Pitcher, D Outerbridge (A Burchall, 68), A Wolffe, T Webb-Caisey, F Crockwell, D Butterfield, O Minors, D Paynter, D Albuoy (A Cannonier, 60)Subs not used: S Boddington, T Govia.Goals: A Cannonier, 89, F Crockwell, 90.Referee: A MouchetteMan of the Match: O Minors (St. David’s).
