Trojans seal promotion
MR Onions 1Somerset Trojans 3Somerset Trojans coach Dennis Brown hailed his young team’s maturity after they secured promotion to the Premier Division last night.Trojans convincing victory over Onions at BAA Field guaranteed the West Enders one of the two promotion places, with Brown’s men requiring just three more points to be certain of the First Division title. That the majority of Trojans’ side are aged 20 and under makes their achievement all the more impressive, said Brown. “Winning promotion was not our main aim at the start of the season, but the team has grown with confidence and we’re pleased to secure promotion tonight,” he said. “It’s been a fairly good season for us as we’ve also won the PDL League and the PDL Christmas Tournament.”Brown believes his team’s relegation from the top-flight last season was a “blessing in disguise” and is confident his youthful side will be better equipped to cope with the demands of the top-flight next time around. For Onions, their own promotion aspirations are now hanging by a thread having lost back-to-back games against Trojans and Robin Hood. Should Hood beat Ireland Rangers at BAA Field tonight, then they will be promoted. Kick-off is at 9pm.Tahj Wade gave Trojans the lead from a free-kick last night in the 18th minute, before Onions equalised through Jaymie Kelly from the penalty spot early in the second half. A few minutes later though, Zahkie Iris’ misplaced cross drifted into the net to restore Trojans’ advantage. They then sealed the win when Jahi Simmons scored a spot-kick late on.Tonight, Wolves play Paget at 7pm, and Prospect face BAA at 9pm at Devonshire Rec.
