Jonte Smith is poised to make his professional debut in the English League One next season.Smith’s Crawley Town clinched promotion to League One with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Accrington Stanley FC at the weekend. The Red Devils prevailed courtesy of a 67th minute strike from midfielder Scott Neilson that wrapped up the third and final automatic promotion spot on the final day of the season.Smith, who signed a pro contract with Crawley Town late last month, said being promoted up the pecking order of English football is “great for the club and community”.He added: “The club have really put an emphasis on how they wanted to get the local community involved this year. It is not only a reward for all the hard work the players have put in, but also the board, coaches, all the people behind the scenes as well as for the fans that have travelled up and down the country supporting them.“It was a huge day for the fans and one of the biggest days in the club’s history. Being promoted to League One is adding to the club’s rich history and will help the club to continue their plan of promoting the importance of the community in the West Sussex area.”Smith, who has banged in 25 goals for the Red Devils’ Academy and reserves this season, was not named in Crawley Town’s squad for the weekend’s promotion-clinching match at Fraser Eagle Stadium. The Red Devils finished third behind champions Swindon Town and runners-up Shrewsbury.Swindon were held to a scoreless draw against Nahki Wells’ Bradford City at Coral Windows Stadium in their season finale.Wells had City fans appealing for a penalty after his goal-bound effort appeared to have been handled in the box. The Bermudian striker also had a shot roll past the upright before being substituted in the 81st minute. The Bantams finished 18th in the 24 team league.
